Wine and Dine with Friends in Texas Hill Country

by Sharon Wen on May 26, 2025 category America, Destinations, Food & Drinks

If you love wine and want to do a cute weekend getaway to Texas Hill Country, you’ve come to the right place! For this trip, my friends and I stayed for 3 days and visited Grape Creek Vineyard, William Chris, and Kuhlman Cellars. I recommend making a reservation ahead of time, as the tasting rooms get fairly busy.

Quick Itinerary:

The drive to get to Fredericksburg from Austin or San Antonio is fairly quick. We drove in Friday after work from Austin and stayed until Sunday afternoon. Restaurant details are listed at the bottom.

  • Friday – Drive to Fredericksburg, TX after work. It took us ~1 hr 45 mins. Grocery shop if necessary. Walk around town. Get drinks and dinner.
  • Saturday – Tasting day at 3-4 wineries. Get drinks and dinner.
    • Start your Saturday morning with a quick jog around town and grab a fresh cup of coffee, breakfast taco, or freshly baked pastry on your way back! My favorite bakery to visit is Twisted Sisters Bake Shop. Save your leftovers for an emergency snack and prepare for a long day ahead. Either plan for a driver or have a designated driver.
  • Sunday – Brunch and quick tasting in town if the group is up for it. Drive out to Enchanted Rock.

Enchanted Rock is also nearby, so I typically end my weekend getaways with a short hike up to the top. Do not go if it’s raining! The surface gets very slippery when wet, and the rangers will not allow you to go up if the conditions aren’t safe because you will get stuck.

Grape Creek Vineyard

Heath Sparkling Wines also has the same parent company, and I usually don’t go for sparkling wine, but their sparkling wine is delicious and not too sweet. Try it out!

William Chris

They’ll greet you with a delicious white or rose. We ordered a bottle and some bread to share. The interior is beautiful, so no matter how busy the space gets, it never feels too stuffy.

Kuhlman Cellars

This was a reddit find, and it ended up being our favorite tasting since they have delicious Napa wines available. We had to wait a bit even though we made reservations (tasting room was fairly busy), so they gave us free welcome drinks. There’s an outdoor patio area, so we got a bottle after the tasting to relax and spend some time outdoors.

These are my tried and true places for food and drinks:

  • Vaudeville Bistro for brunch or a set dinner menu are both great options. We went for Sunday brunch, and it hit the spot – especially after a long Saturday of visiting wineries. I recommend getting the daily special for the perfectly juicy and crispy buttermilk fried chicken. If you got a membership during any of your tastings, there will most likely be area around town to claim your free tasting. Put that membership to use!

  • Hondo’s is a great place for strong margaritas. Our group always start here and see where the night takes us.

  • Pontotoc Vineyard is a great stop for delicious sangrias.

  • Auslander for a no fuss food spot, and right next door is the Elk Store Winery and Distillery – a great bar for cocktails.

  • Twisted Sisters Bake Shop for baked goods and coffee.

My friend always brings a picnic cooler with mimosas, assorted fruits and snacks, and caviar. It’s a delicious and refreshing snack to have back home after a long day out and about visiting different vineyards.

Fredericksburg is such a charming town with a lot to offer! You’ll see bachelorette parties, friend groups catching up, families, and couples out for a romantic getaway. There is something for everyone!

If this post inspired your next getaway or if you enjoyed any of the wineries listed above, please post below or reach out via email or Instagram and share with me! I’d love to hear from you. Ciao!
